Anna Wingeler, Birth and Postpartum Doula in San Francisco

“Nourishing people is my love language.”

— Anna

From Corporate to Following My Calling

Before becoming a doula, I worked in finance. Successful on paper but deeply unfulfilled, I was living from vacation to vacation and searching for purpose. I was making money but not feeling meaning.

A transformative trip to India in 2022 put everything in place: prenatal yoga teacher training, a Vipassana silent meditation retreat. I returned knowing I had found my true calling. Stepping into birth and postpartum work has been a complete transformation. Now I feel alive, grounded, and aligned with my purpose. Supporting families as they move through the powerful transition of welcoming their baby brings me joy and a sense of connection I never knew was possible.

Some fun facts

I've lived in three countries, speak six languages, and traveled the world for a year. I love cooking and hosting theme parties; I once cooked Chicken Tikka Masala and baked 300 muffins for 120 people. I share my life journey with my husband and our furry baby, Luna.

MY PASSION, ROLE & PHILOSOPHY

My passion is to guide you through this transformative journey by walking alongside you, not by telling you what to do.

My role is to create a space where you feel heard, seen, and validated in your emotions and experiences, free from judgment.

My philosophy is to mother the mother. By caring for the mother, we create the foundation for a thriving baby and a balanced, connected family.

Calm Presence Meets Intuitive Care

I meet each family where they are, honoring their unique story, values, and rhythm. My support is rooted in three things that work together: presence, knowledge, and nourishment.

Calm Presence

Through gentle guidance, hands-on comfort measures, and emotional grounding, I help ease fear, fatigue, and overwhelm so you can feel empowered and connected throughout labor and the postpartum weeks.

Evidence-Based Care

I bring knowledge and evidence-based information to every interaction, helping you understand your options so you can make informed decisions that align with your values. No judgment, no pressure.

Nourishment for Body & Spirit

I bring the healing practice of cooking into my doula work. While caring for you through labor or postpartum, I also prepare homemade meals that restore your energy and ground you in comfort.

“When the mother is cared for, the whole family thrives.”

What do you want your birth story to be?

Birth is a transformative and deeply personal journey, one that culminates with a new life brought into this world. My role is to stand beside you as an anchor of support and trust, so you can focus entirely on the work of birthing your baby.

As a birth doula, I focus on personalized care, evidence-based information, and intuitive guidance. Through comforting techniques, position changes, and continuous emotional support, I create an environment where you feel safe and fully supported.

"My birth philosophy comes down to choice. It is the most important thing I hold as sacred in the birth environment."

How can you best nurture yourself after birth?

The postpartum period brings profound transformation: physical, emotional, and mental. Often called the "fourth trimester," it is the most under-supported phase of the entire journey. I am here to change that for you.

As a postpartum doula, I focus on helping you heal as you transition into parenthood. Whether it's offering guidance with newborn care, creating space for you to rest and recover, or simply being a compassionate listener, I strive to meet you where you are. I also bring nourishment in the most literal sense by preparing homemade, healing meals that restore your energy and ground you in comfort during those tender early weeks.

"My postpartum philosophy comes down to healing and nourishing. It is my true calling and deepest work."

Families I've Supported

How does it feel to be nurtured by Anna?

Anna took a ton of pressure off of my partner to get all the physical assistance right. He was able to focus on me and connect emotionally rather than doing hip squeezes. I still cannot believe Anna did those for so long, literally hours. THANK YOU! Anna also helped give my partner confidence in his decision-making when we hit a huge bump in our birth plan (when labor was stalling, signs of infection, and the decision to get the epidural). My partner was able to lean on her to make the best choice given our preferences and intentions.

Birth

Anna was our birth doula for the birth of our first child earlier this month. From the moment we met, I felt comfortable, at ease, and knew I could trust her when the going got tough. Not only was Anna such an amazing emotional and physical support during labor, but she was also a powerful ally and advocate who collaborated well with hospital staff (she was even asked for her card while we were there!), and she was fun to be around and talk with in between the intense times. If we have another baby in the future, I would absolutely have Anna join us, and will be singing her praises until then!

Anna was really great at connecting with my husband as well and also help keep him at ease. She brought a sense of humor that lightened up the intensity and helped everybody feel more relaxed.

Birth & Postpartum

Anna was grounded, warm, curious and incredibly sweet with my baby. I felt safe and trusting to leave her alone with my baby right away, and looked forward to each of our visits.

Postpartum

Anna was a godsend to my family postpartum. She was so attentive and loving, and made me feel immediately at ease. She is such a natural with babies and was able to pop my newborn into the carrier and get her calm and napping in minutes so I could take a much needed shower and nap! Anna is also a PHENOMENAL chef. The postpartum meals she made me were so delicious, hearty, and healthy. I felt so nourished by Anna on every level and highly recommend her.

What to Expect

The questions you're wondering about

Good questions are the beginning of wisdom. Here are the ones I hear most often, with honest answers.

From a young age I've been drawn to caring for babies and discovered my true calling to nurture, empower, and create a safe, supportive space for families during this transformative time. Before becoming a doula, I worked in finance. Successful on paper but deeply unfulfilled. Stepping into this work has been a complete transformation, and I truly thrive when I'm nurturing and walking alongside families during this sacred time.

A doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support during birth and the postpartum period. I am not a medical provider; I don't perform clinical tasks or make medical decisions. My focus is ensuring you feel informed, supported, and empowered to make the choices that are right for you. Think of me as your knowledgeable, caring advocate.

Absolutely not. In fact, the opposite is often true. I support the partner by helping them feel confident and involved: offering guidance, suggesting comfort measures, and creating space for them to connect with the birthing person while I handle practical details and provide reassurance throughout the process. Many partners say that having a doula allowed them to be more emotionally available, because they weren't worried about 'doing it right.'

I meet my families where they are, rather than asking them to meet me in the middle. It's your story and your journey, I hold no judgment about the choices you make. My role is to ensure you feel informed and supported, whatever path you choose.

I join you when you feel you need my support. At the first signs of labor, we'll check in over the phone to talk through what you're feeling and normalize all the wonderful changes your body is making. We'll navigate those early steps together, and the moment you feel ready for me to be by your side in person, I'll be there. I will remain by your side through labor, birth and those quiet moments of skin-to-skin with your baby, staying until the world settles and there is no one else in the room but your new family.

My first priority is always "to mother the mother" because a rested mama makes for a happy baby. Each visit is uniquely tailored to your needs in the moment. When I arrive, we'll start with a conversation on how the last few days have gone so, together, we can plan our time and what matters most to your family that day. My support often blends meal prep and recovery care with practical help, such as light housework or watching the baby so you can rest, shower and eat, all while normalizing the new experiences of parenting a newborn.

Our first conversation is a 30-minute call. I want to understand your vision, your concerns, and what kind of support feels right for you. There's no pressure. It's simply a chance for us to get to know each other and see if we're a good fit.

Trust your gut. The doula-client relationship is deeply personal, and the right fit matters enormously. During our discovery call, notice how you feel. Do you feel heard? Safe? Understood? If something doesn't feel right, I will always help you find someone who is a better match. Your wellbeing comes first.

My training spans birth doula work, postpartum care, yoga, sound healing, and meditation, because I wholeheartedly believe that supporting a family through birth requires the whole person, not just technical skills. In addition to my private practice, I volunteer as a birth doula at San Francisco General Hospital as a way to give back to the community and support families during one of the most meaningful moments of their lives.
